Sanding veneered door frames / casings?

Hello,
I have door frames from 1985 in my apartment that are made of veneered chipboard and unfortunately already a bit damaged. Is it possible to carefully sand such a veneer, for example with 180-grit sandpaper and an orbital sander? There are six frames in total, so I can't sand them all by hand.
