Hello everyone,

I am currently tearing down an old prefabricated house from 1970 and only want to do what is safely possible. While removing the wooden panels from the ceiling, I came across the following crumbling plaster. To me, it looks suspiciously like asbestos. What is your opinion on this?

In addition, these panels are also installed, with the label Turnwald flame retardant according to DIN 4102.

Thank you very much in advance.

It seems to me that there is a kind of "Pisa generation" even among builders. It is unbelievable how many people nowadays simply call anything that is not "three" on the tree and could be a building problem material "asbestos." No, neither of the two pictures shows any asbestos at all. In the first picture, you can see something with an artificial sponge-like structure, probably a foam material. In the second picture, you see a Styrofoam board – I suspect, from the viewing side, a stucco imitation – with a surface attachment of some kind of tile adhesive. Neither is related to asbestos, nor knows anyone, even by sight, who would have gone to the same school as asbestos. Asbestos has a fibrous structure like chipboard or firelighters, and its fibers are cement gray.

We played with asbestos boards in the Eastern Bloc as children. They were gray, fibrous, and felt rough. Back then, these were used for roofing.
