Hello, after reviewing the forum I unfortunately didn’t find anything suitable on the topic of renovating an old prefabricated house. Therefore, I’m asking if someone might share interesting, new experiences in this context. We have bought a Hanse Haus from the eighties and are currently planning the renovation. We will definitely replace the asbestos-containing fiber cement facade and also improve the insulation. What I’m interested in is the issue of pollutants and odors. The main problem substances in older prefabricated houses are primarily the largely odorless formaldehyde as well as the odors chloranisoles and chlornaphthalenes. We also have a musty smell. The question now is: is it generally recommended to replace the V100 panel on the outside along with insulation and then paint the beams and infill panels with limewash, plus apply new insulation and new wood fiberboard? Is that usually sufficient? What about additional or alternative measures such as complete installation of a Valutect foil from the inside, or alternatively plastering the entire interior with clay? Do you see these as alternative measures to replacing the exterior walls or only as an add-on? Thanks and best regards, Felix

I regret that the friendship between you and the local search function has not yet grown warmer. In I have linked further posts - essentially you can largely transfer my assessments on Kampa from that time to Hanse Haus.

And I have certainly pointed out before that the residual off-gassing of a former board will be exceeded by its brand-new freshly stocked replacement from the factory, and such a replacement is therefore a disservice. Clay plaster in a wood house causes me some frowning: in half-timbered houses, the infills were plastered with clay, but the plaster was not applied over the beams as well. Let us boldly assume that the old master builders were not stupid.

Objection. Depending on the region, the beams were plastered more or less extensively both inside and outside. Clay was perfectly suitable for this because it balanced the moisture best. Exposed half-timbering was less common than plastered. And inside, all walls of living spaces were plastered. Utility rooms perhaps sometimes remained with exposed beams.

It can also be old wallpaper/wallpaper glue if no renovations have been done for 10-20 years

Presumably linking and also the search function overwhelm me, but I have found no indication regarding my question about the extent to which good experiences have been made against odor formation by exchanging V100 and old insulation. Something similar applies to Valutect or similar foils in such a context…
