Remove old building floor covering. The adhesive simply won't come off.

Hello,

we are currently renovating an old building from 1968. Everything is going well except for one room that is causing problems. There was a PVC floor with fabric glued down firmly.
Now, in some places the adhesive is coming off the floor, in other places it is stuck like crazy and I can only scrape off the fabric.

Laminate with 10mm impact sound insulation (to even out differences to the next room) is to be laid on top. The glue is maybe about 1mm thick. That doesn’t bother me. I’m just somehow afraid to leave the old nasty glue under the impact sound insulation. Is that a problem?

I have tried paint stripper and adhesive remover. Neither works at all.

Would you just ignore the glue? Or does anyone have a tip on how I can get it off?

Many thanks

Christian

I can tell you how we managed to get it off once. But you won’t like it.

Two people, one with a heat gun, very close. The other with a spatula, applying good pressure. Then it comes off very slowly.
All on our knees, in August in the poorly insulated attic.

My tip: try everything else first ;)

Sanding with appropriate grit is the only thing that can be recommended here. Anyone who works on such adhesive surfaces with "Abbeizer" or a hot air gun does not know the basics of installation technology. Sorry to put it so bluntly. Assistance can therefore only be based on the professional rules - and not on the desire to do everything yourself. Regards: KlaRa

Well, every DIYer starts small. And so far, I think we're doing well. But this brutal surface is causing massive problems. Is it really a problem to leave that stuff in? Or rather, what grit would be suitable to sand it down?

Maybe the glue is water-soluble (I had that with a glued carpet - nothing worked except plain water and long soaking).
