Hello dear forum community,

are there any recommendations for garden pumps to empty a shaft about 4 meters deep and approximately 1 meter wide? The emptying is done regularly.

Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of garden equipment at all.

The pump should not be placed floating in the shaft but stand on a solid surface and have one hose in the shaft to draw water and one to discharge water. At least, that's how I imagine it.

I dislike buying twice and am also willing to spend a bit more if I get a product with a long lifespan.

Thank you very much in advance!

1. Garden water pump with suction hose (pump is upstairs, so is the noise)
at the inlet suction hose with strainer and non-return valve,
at the outlet connect Gardena connector, then you can attach your garden hose with hand shower, sprinkler, etc.,
you have to turn it on and off yourself
2. Submersible pump (is down in the shaft, so is the noise)
cable goes into the pump, hose goes out, a float switch automatically turns the pump on and off,
your hose is attached at the pump, so pretty firmly fixed, not suitable for sprinklers (too little pressure), also pumps out dirt.
In terms of price, you end up between 100-200 € with both systems

important addition,
always fasten the lid on the shaft securely,
danger of death for you, woman, child,
without a ladder no one can get out of there anymore

I haven't even thought about the noise the pumps make yet. Maybe it will be a submersible pump then. Tomorrow I am going to the hardware store to take a look at it. Thank you for the addition. I really need to remember that!

A fixed installation would be a small domestic waterworks system that builds pressure like in your house water pipe. As I understand you, however, a submersible pump might be more suitable. You lower it down on a rope and have a hose attached that pumps the water to where it should go. In my opinion, my pump didn’t have a suction hose; rather, the bottom of the pump was about 5mm above the ground and it sucked in from there. With a submersible pump, you should also be able to empty the shaft, whereas with the domestic waterworks system + suction line, rather less so, because these usually have more distance from the bottom.

what kind of water is this, from the downpipe, soakaway, drainage from the house? if it doesn’t smell, is cloudy or otherwise strange you can use it for watering, also for the houseplants that otherwise only get the lime and chlorine broth (I know, complies with all standards) from the tap
