Question about DALI control: Make the light dimmable

Good day!

I have an LED ceiling light here that actually produces a very nice light, but unfortunately has proven to be too bright for the small room. The luminaire can be controlled and dimmed via DALI. However, I did not plan any wiring for this. At the point where the luminaire is to be installed, there is only a three-pole supply line including protective conductor, starting where the switch is next to the door.

Is there any way to make the lamp dimmable? After all, I have the option of hiding something above the (newly to be installed) drywall ceiling, but I would not be able to access it later.

Practically, the luminaire has four connections (apart from the protective conductor): two for mains and two for DALI.

Thank you very much!

Matthias

DALI still needs two wires for DA+ and DA-.

Do you otherwise have DALI or KNX in the house or is this a single operated lamp that only has DALI connections? There are wireless DALI dimmers for KNX-RF-S. That means you need a KNX-RF-S gateway and e.g. the paladin 683834 rfs from Hugo Müller. Or if it should be autonomous, the wDALI dimmer from Lunatone.

Otherwise, I have no bus technology in the house at all. And I really have to admit that I am not familiar with it. Is it even possible to do anything with the existing wiring, or is nothing possible at all because two wires are missing that were laid there?

Classically, nothing works with DALI. You could only use the Lunatone wDALI solution, where the lamp is connected to the receiver and the transmitter is placed behind a wall switch. Just google it, unfortunately nothing can be linked here. With this, you could even keep the wiring including the wall switch completely and control the dimming process via remote control. The lamp will always turn on at the last brightness level.

However, if only this one lamp is simply too bright for you, you can also use a "quick and dirty" solution like a "cord dimmer," for example from a floor lamp. You can't just dim easily that way, but the lamp is dimmer. For a single lamp, creating a complete DALI or KNX infrastructure seems to me not very efficient.

I am hesitant about solutions where something is behind a drywall ceiling, making it inaccessible. Basically, I still don't even know if it will actually be such a ceiling again or if it will be a ceiling made of expanded metal elements. However, I have been chasing the requested company for weeks and still have no offer. Presumably, the small room is too insignificant for them. The advantage of this solution would be that I can remove an element at any time to access the installations behind it. So I still have to wait.

Is a new lamp an alternative? Maybe you have use for the existing one elsewhere, where bright light is needed. There are now many models that can be connected normally and then dimmed via remote control. Don’t be mad if this should be a bad idea
