Hi, I am new to the forum and hope to get some helpful answers. I want to insulate the outside of my old house (built in 1929) with styrofoam boards. For cost reasons, I want to buy the styrofoam boards myself and provide them to my craftsman. You can get very cheap styrofoam boards on the internet, which would only cost me half of what my craftsman charges. Now I would be interested to know if there are possibly quality differences, are the cheap boards any good? I thought all styrofoam boards are the same and you only have to look at the WLG, or am I mistaken? What do the experts think?

Honestly, I would doubt that the craftsman would install it, or install it cheaper. What would he gain from it, after all he can probably get it cheaper himself. Apart from that, Styrofoam is a brand, you probably mean EPS, there are indeed differences, especially regarding the surface as a plaster carrier - the components have to fit together. Also considered how thick it has to be? I haven't heard of a case where this was checked, but if it goes badly, you have to take everything down again.

1) Are both products made of Styrofoam (brand name!) or perhaps something else? 2) Would the craftsman even process third-party goods? 3) Who is liable for product defects? 4) Who is liable for processing defects? 5) What happens if 3 and 4 assign "blame" to each other?

It has already been agreed with the craftsman that I will purchase the Styrofoam boards myself; the company will take care of everything else. I was recommended 14 cm thick boards, the boards I want to buy are called "WDVS - Fassadendämmung mit Neopor 031/032" and are offered on eBay. If desired, I can gladly provide the link here. In case of product defects, the seller is liable, which is no different if the plasterer brings his own boards; he also sources them from a dealer.

Neopor is not Styrofoam. But it is an ETICS. ;-)

However, that does not answer questions 3-5. In case of doubt, you are caught between two stools.

How much do you save by that? If it's only about 1000€ here, I would really leave it. As already mentioned, if the plaster falls off again because the craftsman used the wrong mortar for your tiles, the dispute will start.
