So we want to build a complete duplex, that is both sides.
That is very reasonable. I had hoped for that already :)
how your experiences with one or the other prefab house supplier have been or are.
Why exclusively prefab house suppliers?
There are no suppliers who would be recommendable to a different degree for duplexes (when built as a "whole") than for single-family houses. After all, it is no different class of building. In principle, duplexes can be divided into two basic types:
for "normal" house widths (from about 9 m) they are usually developed from single-family house concepts. These are only modified inasmuch as they then have one window wall less;
for "narrow" house widths (sometimes significantly under 9 m) they are typically designed as attached end terrace houses.
House suppliers who would be "weaker" in the row house and duplex sector than in the single-family house sector are not known to me. At least not qualitatively. In terms of sales, there might be some who rarely sell anything other than single-family houses - but that probably applied earlier for top-class suppliers. Meanwhile, plots where only duplexes fit have become so frequent that no supplier is "spared" from that.
In this respect, research results regarding customer satisfaction with a supplier can be practically fully transferred between single-family and duplex houses.
It looks somewhat different between customer satisfaction today and in the past: the majority of prefab house suppliers have changed ownership structure in the last twenty years. In the 1980s, these were still "companies," typically led by the founder’s grandson. Then came a phase of mergers within these circles, and meanwhile, they are mostly "brands" (like "Grundig" used to be for radios), which usually belong to several investment groups.
What has remained are the orientations, i.e. brand image / target customer group. Regarding Okal Haus, I would put it this way: you build with them if you still have a savings book and drive the smallest B-Class without extras. The currently typical Bien-Zenker customer from my point of view are young couples, still dual earners, planning marriage and children. From Streif Haus, besides the "Twin" series, I would also look at "Family" to adapt them accordingly.
Look at the reference customers in whom you most likely "recognize yourselves" - that is a good indicator whether the supplier fits.
All named are neither bunglers nor criminals - you don’t have to warn against any of them.
Personally, however, I would not exclude the solid prefabricated builders and the single-brick solid builders. Timber-frame prefabrication is, in my opinion, adequate but not better.
