Hi everyone,

We have already made good progress with our planning. Now we are facing the problem of garage planning. Our wishes would be a garage about 6mx6m - 6mx8m in size without a partition wall, with 2 doors and a side door. Now we are wondering what would be best to do, buy a precast concrete garage or build it ourselves. What are your experiences or recommendations, and what kind of costs should be expected, especially regarding self-construction?
Hope you can give us some tips. :-)

Cheers
Frank

Hello Frank,

in my opinion, you are making the better choice with a precast concrete garage.

The sizes you specified are probably mostly classified as standard sizes and therefore should not incur any extra costs. If I were you, I would simply get two or three quotes for prefabricated garages.

In the case of self-construction, in addition to materials and labor time, there is at least the structural engineer to consider.

Regards,

Dirk

We faced a similar problem, except that it was 3.5 x 6.5 meters and only 1 gate + side door were needed. For us, prefabricated garages (concrete or steel) started at around 8k€ up to 12k€. That was too expensive for us. So we built it ourselves: set point foundations (we got concrete for 20€ from a concrete driver who had leftovers to get rid of). On top of that, a wooden structure made of solid beams (80 * 80). The garage has 8 posts - on them MDF boards and on top pond liner as the roof. Then a sectional door at the front and everything is fine. Costs: wood + screws 3k€, door 1k€ - working time: 8 man-days, of which 4 man-days for assembly (2 people x 2 days).

We were offered both. However, we had to find that a garage with a roof (hip roof), as a finished garage, was considerably more expensive than a brick one.

Thanks in advance, does anyone also have experience with sheet metal prefabricated garages?

Has our neighbor, I believe he is satisfied. You even gain space through the thin walls.

At first glance not recognizable as a metal garage, but on closer inspection and touching it comes across as somewhat "cheap"....
