Hello, I bought a house. There is a bathroom with a shower, tiled from top to bottom with wall tiles. I am wondering whether it makes sense to break off all the tiles and sand off the tile adhesive, then replaster and wallpaper? Or could one, for example, plaster directly over the existing tiles with Ardex r1 and wallpaper anew on top of that? Does anyone have any experience? I would appreciate an answer. Best regards bloblu

Both are possible, I would always rip out the tiles.

if the tiles are smooth and straight and firmly attached and you don’t necessarily have to get behind them into the wall, I’d leave them on. It’s a real sh*** job to knock those things down. And if there are professional ways to avoid that, no matter how (tile on tile, plaster on tile, drywall in front, etc etc). So be it.

Okay thanks. I think I will apply it directly. Can someone recommend a good manufacturer or is ardex already to be recommended?

I can't understand the fear of tile removal here. With a proper hammer and a flat chisel, a tile backsplash in the kitchen is history in an hour. I've knocked down all kinds of tiles / stoneware / whatever in several houses, and I find peeling wallpaper much more annoying. Progress was always quick, especially from the wall they come off like nothing. The hardest were those thick stoneware things in the entrance area of a house, which were supposed to be very expensive. They were laid in thick bed mortar, but even there the few square meters were done in an hour.

It's not about knocking off the tiles, that goes quickly. But sanding off the tile adhesive and replastering the wall smooth xd
