Photovoltaic shingles, instead of a photovoltaic system

Hello,

I am curious why so few, actually almost nobody, builds new with photovoltaic shingles.

Many retrofit a photovoltaic system onto their roof, but hardly anyone directly covers the roof with photovoltaic shingles.

Is there a specific reason for this?

Here are the pros and cons as I know them:

Advantages:
- Cheaper than roof + photovoltaic system
- More aesthetically pleasing, as there is no additional system on the roof
- Larger area possible

Disadvantages:
- You don't have as much choice of different roof shingles

How do you see this topic?

Do you mean Tesla Solar Roof? If you mean that, then

1. Don’t think they are orderable. If you order now, you will get them in 2019 or later
2. Have you ever seen or found a specification for those things?
3. Cheaper? I consider that a rumor
4. I believe they don’t even have approval for the EU/Germany.
4. If you don’t mean those, then google the competition. They are considerably more expensive.

I looked into it briefly, but haven’t followed up further due to the delivery situation. Timing is important when building a house, or do you want to leave the scaffolding up forever or have it set up a second, third time?

It is not cheaper and not a special privilege. Photovoltaics have become a mass business and trying to use some exotic types therefore makes no sense.

Moreover, as far as I know, they are not so efficient due to lack of ventilation/cooling.

The issue with delivery time and ventilation is an argument.

Regarding the price, I’m not exactly sure, I haven’t looked into it that deeply, but I once read that they are cheaper than a newly roofed roof + solar system with the same area.

Brand, for example, still SolteQ.

Because I don't have any roof shingles?

For standard photovoltaic modules, lifespans of 25-30 years are assumed. Do you then want to replace the shingles as well because they hardly deliver any performance anymore?
