Own architect or house building company - Which is cheaper?

I am still at the beginning of the planning process and have now read a first house-building book. It only talks about finding an architect who would also handle the tenders for the craftsmen and oversee these works. But the house-building companies also have architects, right? And then everything would be under one roof. Which option is, in your experience, the more cost-effective one if you want to have a self-designed house built? We lack time (and nerves) for any kind of do-it-yourself work due to professional and family reasons. :)

The architect of a house-building company will hardly plan a house for you completely independently... He will always have in mind what "his" company can and wants to do...

The architects of the house-building companies are rather there to modify the floor plans of the standard buildings according to customer wishes... Whether that is enough for you or not, I cannot judge.

In terms of price, no general statement can be made... A similar house will cost about the same...
