Hello, forum!

A few weeks ago, I already asked here for some tips and also received some. Meanwhile, our house is almost finished in our minds, we have a provider who is currently requesting quotes for the trades and can then give us a fairly precise price.

This will be our house :)

Plot and location:

    [*]750 sqm (25m*30m)
[*]slight north-facing slope (~3-4m gradient over 30m), access from above, so south (street runs east-west)
[*]open view from east over north to west, so quite long evening sun, but usually also a light wind from the west
[*]surrounding houses are low (max. one and a half stories) and relatively far away due to the plot sizes
[*]field and nature right next door
[*]very good city connection, we drive to work 10 and 15 minutes respectively

House:

[*]staggered monopitch roof with ridge parallel to the street, so east-west, lower roof towards the slope
    [*]double-pitched (slope half wider)
[*]will be built 3m from the east edge of the plot
[*]fully basemented with two living rooms on the ground floor towards the slope and outside
[*]classic ground floor with living/dining, semi-open kitchen (sliding door), study, guest WC with shower
[*]upper floor with bedroom, 2x children’s rooms, family bathroom
[*]attic in 3 parts, accessible from the children’s rooms and from the hallway
[*]many floor-to-ceiling windows (but not only)
[*]single garage directly on the street, carport next to it

Technology:

    [*]timber frame construction
    [*]KfW40 standard
[*]insulation with natural materials (mainly cellulose and wood fiber)
[*]air heat pump with integrated ventilation system with heat recovery
[*]solar collectors on the roof for hot water support

Garden:

    [*]will come later :D
[*]corner terrace facing south and west
[*]planned is a mixed hedge towards the street and maybe further around

I hope you can imagine the house a little bit :)

At first, it sounds quite modern because of the staggered monopitch roof and the floor-to-ceiling windows. However, I could still well imagine the overall impression being a bit “friendlier”, cozy. I, for example, dream of a rather Mediterranean garden; on the terrace, many potted plants will stand, I love terracotta and warm tones. Our hardy palm will be dug up here and replanted on the plot (+ one or two more ;)) etc.

That’s why we are already thinking about the house’s exterior appearance. Because when we have a first offer in about 2 weeks and it roughly fits, the details will follow...

Do you have ideas on how we can design our house’s character to be rural, Mediterranean, warm, sunny despite the modern architecture?
Which colors are suitable? I thought of orange tones, maybe also warm yellow, combined with some green...? I can hardly imagine something like that...

It will be a wooden house in timber frame construction, so we would like a partial wooden cladding. Do you have ideas for the arrangement and the color(s)?

I look forward to all tips!
Christiane

Floor-to-ceiling windows only make sense if the planned furniture allows it; just recently I saw a house with such windows where the couch was placed with its back to the window. It looks silly or even ugly from the outside.

Yep, that's true, and we're still a bit uncertain about that point... Towards the terrace, so mainly around the dining area for us, it's clear: lots of floor-to-ceiling windows or doors. But in the back part, where the sofas are, the TV, where you might want to put a cabinet... Maybe we'll place them higher after all. In the study, it doesn't work anyway because of the desk and many shelves, of course not in the kitchen either, and even for the [Kinderzimmer im OG] we're already considering whether we would be taking away their chance later to set up their desk looking out of the window :( Hm...

Remember the fall protection for floor-to-ceiling windows in the children's room :)

Otherwise that sounds good - although that is no longer a "gentle" slope

Hi,

yes, sure ;) Either we will secure the windows with the help of French balconies or choose these windows with fixed lower lights (is that the correct term?), so that only the upper parts can be opened.

Are there any ideas about colors and external appearance?

Best regards,
Christiane

I always call that a "fixed element" :) We did it that way too. You should have long arms, otherwise it's a bit annoying to clean. But I prefer it over a grid.

I would then choose the color in a light orange tone with brick-red bricks. There are also wavy burnt ones that could look good too. For the wood, I would choose a glaze that matches the plaster, although wooden cladding is not typically Mediterranean. No varnish, so you can still see the structure of the wood.

I wouldn't use green. I would rather create that with plants. Maybe a few winter-hardy palms on the terrace and a natural stone surface made of polygonal slabs.

I would reconsider the wooden cladding. It does cause quite a bit of work if you don't like the patina of naturally weathered wood.
