Hello everyone, we are currently in the planning phase of our single-family house.

I would like to hear your opinion regarding the kitchen size. In your opinion, is a kitchen unit of about 3.78m + island + a single tall cabinet/fridge sufficient? In our current apartment, we have about 2.90m kitchen unit + island. Unfortunately, here the countertop is occasionally too small for us:

An alternative could be that we turn the table and then install half-height cabinets with a countertop behind the sofa. However, I don't really like this option:

Thank you very much for your opinions!

Best regards, Hannes

Maybe the topic fits better in the category floor plan planning? If so, could a moderator please move it?

Thank you very much!

My first idea for this:

That would basically be a large U. It would also have the advantage that, for example, after shopping you can place the bag near the storage room for unloading. There is also more workspace since the lower leg can be designed deeper than the 60cm standard depth – but then eventually there is no (nice) space left for the dining table. What I can’t tell: Is there a partition between the couch and the kitchen, at least a half-height wall, or is it completely open?

Hi, thank you very much for your answer. No, we deliberately did not want a partition here, but everything open. There are only two support columns planned here (left and right beside the sofa).

Hmm, with the U it will be quite tight. The idea with the groceries and the storage room is of course not bad. Hmm...

Okay. The refrigerator (that's the box at the top left in the kitchen, right?) is actually positioned pretty poorly. If it really stands there, you sit on the couch with your ear on the fridge... Have you maybe been to a kitchen studio? If it's a good one, they can surely give you very valuable tips. I find the layout itself quite difficult but I also have to admit that I'm personally not a fan of open kitchens.

Yeah, that's going to be a tight squeeze. But you should be able to get more out of it. Have you planned wall cabinets or what should the style be in general?

Of course, the kitchen space is sufficient if you are not inclined to hoard dishes, pots, and supplies, and have not purchased a kitchen machine for every task. I like the open design. Thinking a little differently often helps to build the right house for yourself – unless you are building for others, in which case all the standard rules help. For example, in a house for 4 people, we get by with 5 interior doors. Nobody plans it like that at first. But that suits us perfectly. Have courage for your own idea.
