We have obtained various offers for windows including built-in roller shutters for our new building (36.5 Poroton masonry) - almost all windows in the house are planned to be floor-to-ceiling and the respective lintels are level with the ceiling. Some providers also offer roller shutters with boxes that are only 21.5 cm high for a window height of 235 cm. Others say they have to be 30 cm, obviously due to the increased insulation values.

We would preferably choose the 21.5 cm high boxes because we want to keep the window area as large as possible. Would there actually be any reason against that? They have to be insulated separately anyway - or not?

Hello Marcel, all boxes are insulated accordingly. This has nothing to do with the height of the box. The problem is the so-called Wickelradius or commonly "the roll inside." The thickness of this roll depends on the size of the slats and the height of the windows. For the slats, there are mini shutters starting at 34 mm up to maxi shutters with 54 mm slat width. This is more of an optical question. Of course, the larger the slat, the larger the roll (Wickelradius) will be. For your application, in my opinion, this means 30 cm without alternative. There are only 1 or 2 manufacturers who build smaller ones. However, due to the required height of the roll, the box then appears quite flimsy.

One of these manufacturers is Europe’s largest window manufacturer, who accordingly sells the most windows in Europe (see attachment). If the boxes were lavede in their design, this might not have been a secret given the sales figures of this manufacturer, or am I possibly overlooking something? I don’t want to sugarcoat the preferred design, but I am only trying to understand the counterarguments. So far, I have not been able to find any negative experiences anywhere on the internet.

I know the manufacturer! I have written you my opinion and my experience. We are talking about 8 cm and eternal use. It is your decision! The manufacturer himself is not bad, but he cannot outsmart the geometries.

Don't see what's unusual about that. For example, there's also one from Komax, starting at 24cm. 30cm is already the largest.

this is not about what the market offers, I know that myself. The manufacturer must ensure that the roller fits into the box with the chosen slat and the window height. Please also read the posts to the end.
