That sounds to me as if the thread is damaged.... Can you see anything on the screw? If not, it's the threaded counterpart. One option would be to try several times whether the thread still catches again - but of course there is also the risk that it will completely slip. Best (but most labor-intensive) solution - to use an appropriate thread tap and re-cut the thread, often it's only a small part that is no longer "running smoothly". Do you have one or can you organize one from someone you know?
