Hello,
we are currently renovating a 1960s house.
Until now, it was heated with oil, so there is a room in the basement where until recently the oil tank and corresponding equipment were installed. This has now all been removed, as we are switching to a heat pump system.
Now we are wondering whether we can use the oil tank room without restrictions as a basement room and also for storing preserves, etc., or if this is not a good idea, for example due to possible gases or residues on the walls, etc.? Has anyone had experience with this by any chance? Or tips on what we can do to make the room "safe" to use?
Thanks in advance and have a nice evening to all readers :-)

The oil was stored in tanks after all - so I would say that the room can continue to be used :)

Thank you for the response :-) The room always smelled strongly of oil, and even now it hasn’t completely dissipated. I just don’t know if it will fully "vent off" over time or not?!

Well, since when has the oil no longer been stored in the tanks?

I can quite well imagine that the vapor will evaporate over time... The question is just when?!

The tanks including their contents have only been outside for 10 days - the question is also whether you can rely on your nose regarding the indoor air pollution? Or are there perhaps measuring devices for something like that?

Keyword VOC (volatile organic compounds). A building biologist should be able to measure something like that. Maybe you can also find something in the Yellow Pages under the keyword environmental (environmental measuring technology).
