Looking for a recommended lime converter

I have very hard water here and therefore want to purchase a lime converter. As far as I know, there are two options, lime converters based on electricity or salt. The electric devices are cheaper but are said not to last as long. Salt is more expensive, but supposedly also more effective. It is also said to last longer. Which device do you recommend based on your experience?
