Hi,

we want to grow a small vegetable garden and are currently looking for a good spot for it in the garden.

In general, our property faces South/West, the house is located in the North/East corner.

Between the house (west side) and the parking space, we have an area of about 60 sqm which we could either use as lawn, which we would like (it is not in the direct line of sight from the terrace, is outside the play area for the children/dogs, and the main lawn area would thus offer more space for the swing set and trampoline). For the trampoline, for example, it would not be an option because we cannot keep an eye on the small kids there. The South-West side behind the carport towards the garden shed is shaded from 5 p.m. by huge trees from the neighboring property (the shade then gradually spreads over the rest of the garden and from 8 p.m. the sun comes back when it passes the trees). However, there is no sun there from morning till evening, meaning from around 9/10 a.m. until early evening. Would that be okay or does the vegetable garden need sun from 5 a.m. till 10 p.m.?

What about the greenhouse, would the spot also be okay for that? I once heard that a greenhouse should mostly get the evening sun, is that correct?

From 9 am to 5 pm, regional products should not be a problem and is completely sufficient. With herbs, I have also found that the native ones (parsley, mint, chives, and co) only need half a day of sun, otherwise they consume too much water, whereas the Mediterranean ones prefer it drier, so with plenty of sun. However, I would plant the semi-shaded herbs and also lettuce near the kitchen -> short distances :) For trees: peach, apricot, grape, and kiwi as sunny as possible; apples and pears also tolerate partial shade.

Regards Yvonne

Bottom right should therefore be almost sunny all day? I would build a small greenhouse there and plant some tomatoes and similar, maybe also chillies if you like them. By the way, I didn’t quite understand your explanation, and I don’t find the position you marked that optimal, unless you want a separation.

I think after one year he already has corresponding experience and possibly the greenhouse is already built and therefore it is no longer so current.
