We have almost everything planned in our house (new build semi-detached house), only the lighting in the living room is giving us trouble.

Brief description: On the ground floor, we have, among other things, the kitchen and living room, which are separate from each other. In the kitchen, we have planned these ceiling spots corresponding to the kitchen. In the living room, we are unsure and fluctuate between 2 ceiling lamps, wall and ceiling lamps, wall and ceiling spots, only ceiling spots together with floor lamps... etc. However, I would also like lighting for our display cabinets, in which case the ceiling spots might be too much? We are charged 40 euros per ceiling spot, which is cheaper than the lamps I like...

The room is rectangular and about 7m x 5.5m in size and faces northwest. On the west side (so the 7m side), we have planned 2 double patio doors, on the north side (the 5m side) a tall, narrow, wide window (not to be opened, only for light and aesthetics...).

I generally find it quite difficult to plan the room because of all the windows and doors. It is a large room that really only needs to accommodate a sofa, TV, piano, and a few pieces of furniture, but it has little wall space. Our sofa should be the centerpiece (with armchair and stool), it can stand freely in the room. It is very modern, made of light gray leather...

I look forward to tips and ideas!!!

PS In the living room, there will be no eating or working, but definitely reading, playing the piano, listening to music, and watching TV should be possible!

Hi,
I’m personally not a fan of spotlights. I find it somehow uncomfortable. It’s okay in the kitchen, but in the living room? Not my thing. Do they actually light up the room or more like spotlighting a single point?
I like light from above, so we planned everything with ceiling lamps. They have plenty of power, so you can read everything well. For cozy moments, we also have floor lamps and the cabinet light connected to a dimmer via multiple sockets.

During the planning, we also planned 2 ceiling lamps. Shortly after, I changed my mind again. And then again and again and... basically, I'm totally into spotlights in a new build (however, LED spots tend to be a bit bluish, halogen apparently looks better). Yes, the spots rather beam on one spot, so you would need many spots to light the whole room with them. It would only be part of the solution. We also considered wall lamps, but somehow that makes you inflexible with the furniture arrangement afterwards and we have so little wall space anyway.

What do you do over the seating area then? Only the ceiling lamp or something "closer"? I was thinking of one of those arc floor lamps that swing into the room...

Could you give me details about the cabinet light? I'm looking for ideas!!!

Price-wise, floor lamps combined with spotlights would probably be the cheapest solution, unless you are okay with cheap Ikea lampshades....

PS: Frau Gabor’s quote is great

So I had at least one of the floor lamps in mind as an arc lamp, so that it can be used as a reading lamp and you don’t have to have the big light on all the time. In our cabinet, the light is built in. That is a very conservative showcase lighting. Nothing more. Because of the price, I really wouldn’t subject myself to an Ikea lamp. Then I’d rather just have the painter’s lamps on the ceiling until the money is scraped together.

As main lighting, the spots are probably sufficient in quantity, but to create coziness or for reading or working (also playing the piano), I would tend to go for floor lamps. When do you need the ceiling light? To look for something or to iron or to clean. For a room of about 35 sqm, you need quite a few.... to me, that would be too expensive. I have/had no problem with Ikea lamps. We have a bathroom spotlight (with warm LED) and floor lamps. I find arc lamps very stylish and they are flexible.

I also prefer ceiling lamps instead of spotlights. We also install ceiling lamps that provide plenty of brightness. For ambiance, there are various floor, arch, cabinet, and decorative lamps...
