Hello everyone,

We are currently in the process of creating a small path around our new building. The whole thing is a path 1.30m wide that will be filled with stones and stepping stones will be laid. Underneath is 40cm of compacted frost protection gravel.

My question is whether you can lay a dimpled membrane with a width of 1.30m between the stones and the frost protection gravel to prevent growing weeds? By now, a lot of weeds have already blown in.
I have attached a picture that I found online. This is roughly how it should look.

Regards, Michael

What is wrong with dimpled membrane? I have used weed control fabric several times, but unfortunately it has not helped in the long term.

For example, water cannot drain and then moss or similar will grow. Ultimately, instead of studded membrane, you can also lay plastic foil underneath, since it is about preventing the growth of weeds. Even if you concrete it and then fill it with such stones, something will eventually grow out of the bed.

What kind of weed fleece? Use thick geotextile fabric then nothing will come through.

Under the gravel side area of the slabs, we have geotextile. Since organic material comes in from above, something eventually grows, but it can be easily pulled out. Our area is almost four years old. If we were to decide on the execution again, I would vote for low cushion plants (that do not need mowing) between the slabs. Such areas are not used so intensively.

Best regards

Geotextile weed barrier protects only from below. What comes from above must be picked. But it comes out easier. If you don’t wait for years. Noppenbahn regularly turns the path into a lake, greenery still comes from above.
