Instead of tiles (Kosten: Material, Sperranstrich, Kleber, Verlegung, Verfugung), one could also use frosted laminated glass, which costs about 35 euros/sqm. Although edge grinding is required, the glass can be glued directly onto the spackled drywall (grüne Platte) with silicone.

Does anyone have experience with such surfaces or know of other materials that provide water protection behind a shower and/or bathtub and are not as expensive as tiles?

In my opinion, you also need a barrier layer here, since you will also have edge joints. Panels placed around the corner are, to my knowledge, additionally glued with corner connectors, and only then is the joint sealed with silicone. It may be cheaper overall, but is that what you want? Smooth surfaces are always somewhat cooler than a nice tile with an appealing texture.

I don't have a corner – just a wall. And taste-wise, you have to want that, that's true.

I have also already considered glass instead of tiles in the shower. One could also definitely use printed glass. But whether tiles would be cheaper again, I do not know. I was mainly thinking about avoiding grout.

I have already had that in hotels, plates about 1.00x2.50 in size. It looks clean. But I don't know if you don't have to follow up more with turkeys ...
