Good evening folks,

We have a house here built around 1955.

Between the ground floor and the upper floor there is a wooden beam ceiling, the construction from bottom to top is as follows.

Wood paneling

Roof battens

Vapor barrier (could also be regular foil)

Wood beams

and then nothing for now.

Between the wooden beams there appears to be a filling made of clay.

Both floors are heated, this is not about an unheated attic or similar.

So I have the following plan.

I want to fill the missing loose filling between the wooden beams with dry clay loose fill, OSB boards are then to be screwed onto the wooden beam ceiling, on top of that will come impact sound insulation and laminate.

Is it possible to do it this way?

If the sound insulation downwards is not given, that would not be a problem.

I just want to know if it can be done like that.

Have a nice evening!

Clay, especially when mixed with straw, is really great. But you also have to think about the weight, so that the ground floor ceiling doesn’t end up in the soup bowl. Maybe you’d also like to consider cork granulate as filling between the beams. For OSB, choose panels with low load stress if possible. If manufactured in Germany, this is easy; with bargains from abroad, caution is advisable.

Enjoy the work

Because of the weight of the screed, I would ask a professional; a structural engineer told us this ceiling construction cannot bear much weight. We also have a wooden beam ceiling (filled with something, presumably slag; built in 1921), on top of that lies the original wooden floorboards, on top of which OSB panels are screwed, then impact sound insulation and laminate. This works; but quiet is something else. It all vibrates.

Hey thanks already for the two answers, strange that I only just got a notification for both, anyway.

I also thought about the problem with the weight, basically nothing was really different before except that now I will replace the old floorboards with OSB boards and laminate.

Regarding the filling I thought like this now, until now everything between the beams is filled with clay, so the filling is missing by about 5mm at the same height as the wooden beams, if at all.

I thought I would leave the space, otherwise I am a bit afraid that if the OSB boards should sag over time, too much pressure might be exerted on the filling at that spot and the clay might be pushed downward, meaning the ceiling would come down.

The plan now is

to screw 15mm OSB boards onto the wooden beams with fully threaded screws, then another 15mm OSB board on top FLOATING and staggered to the first layer. Then impact sound insulation and then laminate.

Would anyone else do it like this?

I think it should not matter whether I lay 30mm OSB boards at once or 2x 15mm, maybe two layers are even better, right?

Our floor was covered with nailed boards, which was done about 35-40 years ago. On top of that, we screwed down 21mm OSB panels, then impact sound insulation, and then vinyl. It works great, but everything vibrates and there is practically no impact sound insulation.

We did it like that upstairs as well. And because there are so many layers of wood on top of each other, you can hear elephants marching from the ground floor upstairs. However, it was not much better with carpet before.
