Hello everyone,

All interior walls of our house (built in 2007) were finished with smooth exposed plaster, which unfortunately was applied very poorly. Over the years, more and more cracks formed, partly step-shaped, on the non-load-bearing walls. It was once said that the settlement joint was forgotten. Here and there, the company repaired some spots, but afterwards it didn’t look much better than before. Before, there were cracks; afterwards, you can clearly see where it was repaired. Therefore, we eventually stopped complaining because it only made things worse. Painting covers the cracks for a few months, then they become visible again. Filling/repairing the cracks is also visible afterwards, of course. In short: We are fed up with seeing our walls like this. Since it is out of the question for us to have the plaster renovated, we came up with the idea to wallpaper. However, we are unsure whether wallpaper will adhere to such exposed plaster.

We are therefore grateful for any tips and advice.

No guarantee can be given to you here. But a painter's fleece on a properly smooth surface will surely work. Just describe the problem at the relevant specialist store. You should get concrete help there.

What material is the plaster made of?
With clay, you can easily "wipe over" smaller cracks again without any problems.
If the cracks are not from the plaster but from the masonry (step-shaped), your wallpapers will also tear. Depending on how much movement there is, a painter's fleece may be enough, but even that has its limits.

We know the problem: some spots were also repaired for us and now the repairs are visible in our very successful Q2 structure. However: the walls upstairs with the windows could be disguised by repainting for us, since the wall surfaces are shaded.
And we are considering decorating one or two walls with wallpaper, which also fits a bedroom. By the way, we deliberately avoided coverings so that we can see the settlement cracks... a few hairline cracks don’t bother us either. That is just like the darkening of the facade, simply normal.

To your question: plaster is plaster, it’s always primed beforehand anyway. Do you have latex paint on the plaster? Otherwise, fill the cracks yourself with a flexible filler. Larger cracks should be stuffed with acrylic and then wallpapered.
Paint is not a filler. But you already know that.
No further cracks should appear with you. And after 13 years you can also renovate, so there’s no need to be annoyed about it.
