Is it possible to make a storage compartment in the entire shower side wall?

Hello everyone,

we have a question regarding a shelf in the shower. We would like to have it along the entire length of the side wall. This shower is completely built with masonry. 17.5 cm KS bricks. The walls do not reach the ceiling and are made with your concrete overlay. Our question is, how can we create this shelf? If we were to install a lintel, according to the architect, the rest of the wall above would be too unstable. Do you perhaps have any other suggestions for us?

Thank you!

At our place, the storage in front of the brick wall was done with drywall.

Best regards

That is of course possible, but we do not want to change the dimensions of the shower. The compartment must therefore go into the KS wall.

Then find a structural engineer and an architect who will go along with it. I would be pessimistic about that. They already have a heart attack with horizontal slots for an electrical cable, and you want to hollow out the wall on a large scale... such a niche is not only 2cm deep, you have to hollow out half the brick, how is that supposed to hold? Remove the entire KS wall and execute it in drywall. But even there, 17.5cm is tight, depending on what is supposed to hang on it and what material thicknesses are required for that.

We also simply had a drywall shell with a projection built in front of the KS wall, almost across the entire width. In other words, we have no compartment but a shelf.

I would do it that way again. Compartments are, IMHO, more difficult to clean, etc.

Since it is not that deep, I would simply cut it out. However, a good part of the brick must remain.
