Is it possible to convert IKEA BESTA wardrobe into a bench?

Hello community!

I have planned a special wardrobe. The Besta corpus with the dimensions 120x40x38 cm is to serve as a seat bench. Naturally, the corpus stands on the floor and is not attached to a wall.

Now the critical question for the local pros: can the corpus support a weight of 100 kg? In other words, if a heavy man sits on it, will the corpus aka the bench hold or will the furniture collapse?

Many thanks at this point for any clarifying answer.

Best regards

Stephan

Hello, somewhere I once read that someone working at Ikea tested that BESTA can hold 100 kg. Just check in the furniture store if there is a bench standing around and test it.

So the Besta TV corpus is supposed to have a higher load capacity than the normal dresser corpus according to Ikea. The total weight of the TV corpus is also somewhat higher; I suspect that additional particle boards have been installed inside as reinforcement. However, I also bought a Besta dresser, the 120x64x38 (the normal corpus, not the TV version), with 2 drawers on top, 2 doors at the bottom, then the glass plate on top; the piece stands on the Besta metal feet (I don’t remember the name right now) and on top there are 4 hi-fi components with a total weight of almost 50kg (amplifier 24kg, CD player 12kg, cassette recorder 8kg, tuner 6kg). The piece holds, nothing bends, and according to Ikea the corpus is approved for up to 20kg.... additionally, heavy things like 4x500 sheets of printer paper are stored inside. The TV version is apparently approved for up to 50kg (if I’m not mistaken) and I have already walked on it with my 65kg without anything creaking. The fasteners are unfortunately now made of plastic and no longer of metal. However, at our Ikea there is a big junk box in the [Fundgrube] where screws, fasteners, and all sorts of assembly materials for all Ikea furniture are available. You can fill small containers for €1.50 and you can also find the metal fasteners there. This way you can get them very cheaply. It will definitely be more stable.

I have the Besta cabinets in the living room and used this size as an overhead unit. They are very light compared to the Metod cabinets. If I needed something to sit on (I assume you will put cushions on it anyway), only the small Metod carcasses would be suitable. They are much sturdier and heavier. 2x

For additional stability, a 120 cm board on top. You can also screw on different feet there. Regards, Robi
