I have now read up and down at BG Bau but I still don’t quite understand….

We are planning to renew our roof. Nothing is fixed yet, but in addition to a tradesman, we as a married couple, the father-in-law, brother, possibly friends could help and maybe even someone from MyHammer or from newspaper ads.

The renovation will take 2-3 weeks and of course I want to insure all involved because if someone falls from the roof or the crane causes some damage, that’s no fun.

Therefore, I was thinking of a builder’s liability insurance and for us as a married couple an accident insurance or does the health insurance cover that?

Who would pay if any of the above-mentioned helpers get injured?

As I said, I have read at BG Bau and also inquired but so far no answer. I had read that for under 40 hours of help they don’t pay anyway, builders don’t either but what about the others, how can I insure them?

Construction helper insurance of BG Bau. No matter how long they work for you.

The 40 hours refer to contributions. If the helpers work together less than 40 hours on construction, no contributions have to be paid; otherwise, a minimum contribution of 100€ applies. Actually, you can communicate quite well with BG by phone.
It is all much easier than writing it here.
Since BG only covers some cases, I recommend private construction helper insurance for larger assistance jobs – but it is already included in many accident insurances. Your insurance agent or a look at the policy will help here.

Ok thanks understood … but if I don’t know the names yet, of course I can take out a construction helper insurance without names. But what do I report to [BG Bau]?

If you don't know anything yet, then you simply don't report anything to BG Bau. I believe the reporting deadline for the respective person is one week before starting work. And the "proper" insurance doesn't ask for names.

Oh, and I just read that in a judgement someone did not have to pay BG Bau contributions even though the fathers had helped, because it counts as a favor. If something then happens to such a father, BG Bau does not pay at all. So I prefer to insure him through a construction helper insurance.

No, BG Bau does not pay in case of a favor. So if the mother feels like coming by one afternoon and tidying up, she is not insured because that is a favor. Work that is otherwise performed by companies and not just a "one-off" (a good example of a favor is help with moving), those are insured.
