Hello!

The windows and also the front door element will be installed here in the next few days. Actually, the installation of the front door doesn’t suit me at all, because many craftsmen will still have to go through the rough and finishing work, and what if the door gets damaged – and then: nobody saw – nobody was there...
Isn’t it usual to first set up a construction door? In the end, it would always be annoying if the door gets damaged, because it only causes trouble.
Can I demand that the door be installed later? Is the window installer allowed to charge for the door already or only at the installation date? How should I behave correctly?

Thank you.

Hello Hansi, the door frame must now be included as it is plastered with both the interior and exterior plaster. You could have a simple neutral construction filling installed; it was automatically included with our window installer.

With us, the door had already been installed (prefabricated house). Only the lock was replaced with a construction lock so that the subcontractors would have keys to get into the house.

When I asked what would happen if the door was damaged during the construction process, our site manager said that it would then be replaced. We are only allowed to enter the house and work there after the official handover, so any damage to the door would be attributable to one of the subcontractors.

Ask if it is the same with you when you are building with a general contractor.

We are building an architect’s house and the trades are being contracted separately. We are even working ourselves. The door element (two side panels, the door in the middle) is very expensive. I find it unacceptable if the door is installed already now. Maybe the window fitter does not want to store the door any longer? I am also interested in the legal aspect. Can I demand installation at a later date?

You are the client.

So you say who does what and when. However, whether the sequence makes sense is better discussed with your architect.

You can also install the door last of all, you will receive the invoice for the additional effort.

How about wrapping the door panels and side parts well with cardboard, plastic, etc.? That should help you prevent the risk of damage.
