Hello everyone,

I want to install a vapor barrier around the collar beam. Unfortunately, there are several problems with this. For example, the rafter purlin anchor is in the way. I have already tried to tape around it. Unfortunately, I have to find that the foil is then not airtight.

I have some ideas, but I am very unsure. A simple but perhaps not nice solution is to saw the anchors and bend the metal parts that are in the way. The rafters are mainly attached to the collar beam at another point. Of course, it would be better to move the anchors to the back of the middle purlin. Or you solve the problem completely differently by installing OSB boards in the cavities and then sealing them all around with reinforced tape.

What is your assessment or what ideas would you have?

Thanks & best regards

Billie

Maybe it’s not clearly visible in the picture, but what do you expect to achieve by sealing the hole? If this is going to be an attic conversion, it’s better to create a separate enclosure.

Hello, thank you for the answer. Of course, you can do it that way as well. The only argument for the foil in the gaps is dust and weather protection. However, you can also use something else for that.

Best regards
