Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask how you collected and organized your ideas before/during the house planning. I am still pretty early in the process, but I already have stacks of magazines lying around here. Now I'm wondering how to get that sorted and organized.
Did you mark pages, links, addresses, photos in the magazines that you liked? Or did you cut out pages/articles/photos and keep them sorted by themes (kitchen, bathroom, fireplace, garden, etc.)? If yes, how did you collect that? Boxes, folders?
I have no plan right now, just get scared looking at the ever-growing stacks of magazines and soon won’t be able to keep track, let alone find something that I liked.

Looking forward to tips and experiences :-)

Hello Panama,

I also collected many catalogs and magazines at the beginning. Then I cut out photos or floor plans and neatly filed everything in a folder. Now our floor plan is fixed and it’s time to have talks with construction companies. Many also wanted to see our ideas, even from houses that we only liked visually. They were all grateful for our collection.
You can hardly keep all the magazines, etc. :)
The huge stack annoyed me at some point too.

Good luck with searching.

I tore out and filed away... never looked up again, because: photographic memory.

Not everything you like has to be implemented. Too many highlights are not good either.
Somehow, the few things you keep fit.

Still: the most beautiful thing is the planning, even more beautiful is what arises by chance.

Hello,

we also looked through many catalogs and magazines and marked a few floor plans and views that we particularly liked. Afterwards, we drew "our" floor plan on a sheet of paper and discussed it in detail. Because of a few "problem areas," we then looked again at the implementation in the floor plans of the catalogs. Ultimately, we had a floor plan that we calculated through with a few nationwide GÜ representatives. Finally, we also went to the house-and-yard architect of a local GÜ. He added a few optimizations and refinements to our floor plan and showed a better accommodation of the LWWP. In the end, he drew our final floor plan and some views freehand.

We are now very happy with this. Some things would not have been solved so well without an architect. Therefore, I can only recommend planning with an architect. But good preliminary planning was very helpful and time-saving.

Best regards Jochen

Hello,

we kept a few magazines "in one piece" and indeed, as ypg had already written, never looked into them again.

Individual things like floor plan ideas, equipment details, or other interesting things we scanned, saved in different folders created by topic on the PC, and cataloged in the form of a table of contents (Excel file).

We really used these files a few more times until our final planning was done.

In addition, in various books purchased on the topic of house construction, we marked the pages of interest to us with colored adhesive strips and also created a separate Excel file as a "table of contents" for that.

Regards,

Dirk

So for us, besides the magazines, the most valuable help was a huge house exhibition park near Frankfurt. I think many floor plans still look good on paper, but actually walking through the individual ideas of the house providers and taking in the different room sizes and layouts was really the best way to clarify your own wishes. Maybe there is something like that near you too?

Best regards,
Ziva
