How did you inform yourselves before the construction project?

This question is mainly directed at builders who have already completed their building project or at least have it well underway:

Which sources did you use to inform yourself? And what was particularly helpful in hindsight?

I am still at the beginning of the project and my sources are:

- Various guides from the Consumer Advice Center
- "Builder’s Handbook" - Looks like a good all-rounder on the topic of building.
- "(No) Shoddy Work in Construction" - Title somewhat unfortunate but sounds promising content-wise. A bit more technical than the Builder’s Handbook
- Of course this forum :)
- My father constantly hands me "Building & Renovating" magazines. It’s a bit of an advertising sheet, but good for gathering ideas
- We will become members of the Building Protection Association and will make use of their advice...

Do you have other good books/magazines/newsletters that have helped you a lot?

Thanks in advance!

Blogs, blogs, blogs In my opinion the most helpful, and often the most honest. With books, people want to make money, does that really bring that much? I haven't read any so far. For ideas and inspiration, one or two magazines. But most of it is free information from other builders.

What we liked best (even though we are 'just' renovating): Oberheims Heim: A construction diary with expert tips. Fraunhofer IRB Verlag 2004. It originated from a newspaper series in the Morgenpost in Berlin, some things are quite Berlin-specific, but not bad for beginners.

RobsonMKK do you also recommend any specific blogs?

No, I haven't. It strongly depends on who you are building with. Ideally, blogs/journals from the preferred company. Or from the region to get to know one or two companies. It is quite specific.

I bought some technical literature and borrowed the "Lehrbuch der Bauphysik". At work, we can access all DIN standards, which has helped me sometimes. I don't think much of blogs; so far, I've mostly read too many subjective "Meinungen und Befindlichkeiten" instead of facts, as well as a lot of useless text.
