House purchase - Reason or gut feeling

Now the time has finally come. The decision is just around the corner. We have 2 options: a great house in the big city or a great house 30 km away, in a smaller town. Our gut feeling is for the big city, but then I wouldn’t have as much time for the family, as I would be home less often due to work. If we chose the equally great house in the small town, I would have excellent working hours in my current job, but we wouldn’t feel as comfortable there.

Well, I think as an outsider you really can't judge that, or giving help there is pretty much impossible. Everyone could only decide for themselves. The question is whether you keep the job near the small town for the long term (10 years or so) or eventually move to the big city for work anyway? Generally speaking, though, I would rather commute than buy a house just because of the shorter commute where I don't feel so comfortable...
