Hi,

we are currently building our house without a basement. The plot is a field that slopes down towards the street, so we had to add about 0.8m of fill below the foundation slab to reach street level. The plot is 17m wide x 45m long, the house starts 11m from the street. In front, the crane area 8x8m and the driveway were filled up, around the foundation slab we currently have 2-3m of fill for the scaffolding. The entrance is on the side which is about 3.5m from the boundary, the other side is 4.5m wide and has 2 doors to the garden.

Now we are considering how to model the plot in terms of height. The neighbors probably will not fill up to the property boundary. At the back, we will extend the current fill for the terrace, at the entrance side we would like to fill up to the boundary to lose as little space as possible, the other side we would shorten to 1m circulation and then lead with stairs into the garden.

Does anyone have websites where one can get inspiration on this topic or recommendations on how to implement this independently and with not too high costs? Is it best to use L-shaped blocks for the fill up to the property boundary? How do you calculate how high the retaining walls should be? Are there guidelines if you want to let a slope run out, what gradient you can work with? Somehow I find it very difficult to find information on the internet :/

Thanks a lot,
Claudia :)

Think three-dimensionally and level the terrain only at the spots where you want to place a table with chairs or need a flat "Gartensportfläche" (such as for table tennis). A few steps or a slight slope between the levels add some "Pfiff" to the whole. The rest simply remains in its natural form, which you incorporate into the garden design. Children play wonderfully on slanted surfaces; they include that in their play. It would be a shame to make the property "flat".

Great basic idea :)

At first, I mostly thought that I have to secure it, so that the house doesn't "slide down".

Securing takes up little space, that is a partial task of the foundation. Look at a slope on a highway and you will get a sense of how steep a vegetated terrain can be without risk of slipping. You will manage with far less "tilt" on your property.

Is your plan oriented to the north? I would also solve this minimally invasively: pave the access road (east?) (possibly on a small "dam") and the garden access (west, right?) either slightly raise it or with two or three steps. Is there a direct access to the terrace (top of the plan or north)? Maybe the terrace can also be slightly lowered? And, of course, design the rest towards the top of the plan... there is more than enough space there.

You can google "vom Landleben." They have a blog about their relatively similar house/property.

Good tip with "Vom Landleben". The backyard faces directly north, the street is to the south
