House building - an eternal construction site?

How were your feelings shortly before moving into your new house? We are just before moving in (beginning of September), the excitement is of course very great, but every time I discover a new "construction site" that still needs to be completed. Here a lit house number, there a mailbox, and some outdoor lamps here. I feel like this will go on forever and this feeling just wears me out. The feeling of never finishing. I know that you can't have everything right away, many things will come over time. At the moment, I simply have no headspace and no ideas for the utility room. We have ordered most of the furniture, but many small things are still missing, such as a desk, lamps, or dressers. Some things need to be fixed, currently painting is going on. I have been ignoring the outdoor area so far, but I think this will change quickly once we live in the house and every time I look outside and see the construction site. How long did it take you to really feel at home? When were you truly "done"? Or does the house remain an eternal construction site where there is always something to do? Looking forward to your answers :-)

There is probably always something to do ... and forever ;)

I enjoy constantly coming up with new ideas and putting them into practice.
But it is certainly possible without the constant redesign ... that would require quite a bit of discipline from me :D

That really depends on how far your construction site is at the time of moving in. If everything is already finished, really everything (including outdoor facilities...), then you are basically (at least for the time being) done. If you move into a "construction site," of course the construction still takes longer. Due to a lot of personal work (outdoor facilities, paving, balcony slabs, basement after prefab walls completely in EL), more than 2.5 years passed after moving in… And I agree with the previous poster, with a house you are never really finished.

That is normal, even with a new build. With house and garden, you are never finished, you can probably ask anyone who owns property and doesn’t have a cash cow. We moved in after the partial renovation in 2017 and have more or less gone around the garden once, but there is still a lot missing in the house. And once we are done with that, new construction sites will come up that time brings with it. If you want to be "finished," owning a house is probably not the right choice :D

Moved in last October, and after some smaller construction work (hedges, terrace tiles, fences, lawn edges, ...) the last installations (front door canopy and railing) and furniture have now been ordered and are expected. So for us, after about a year of moving in, we will be through the worst.

I already have grass in the front for the children. The embankment and plants are there too. On Friday, the last soil will be put in. On Saturday, we move. I ordered all the lamps in one go and had the electrician install them immediately. But there will still be many other construction sites left... Interior doors will come later and the sanitary final installation only the Monday after... Etc. But I've heard worse :)
