Hello everyone,

my better half and I are currently thinking about the lighting planning in our house. We had an appointment with a lighting consultant, which, however, was quite disappointing. Apart from showing very beautiful but also very expensive fixtures, he could hardly bring in any ideas for the planning that we hadn’t already come up with ourselves. So we have now made some initial thoughts on our own. Unfortunately, my girlfriend generally does not like indirect lighting or similar :-((((, which is why our first plan is probably quite "unconventional". However, I am very open to (also special) ideas.

We would like to largely rely on spotlights and, in the living area, on wall lamps as secondary lighting. The children's bathroom and guest WC will get simple lighting at the mirror.

We are not happy at all with the master bathroom. Do you possibly have any ideas there?
Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for constructive criticism.

Greetings from sunny Aachen,
Christian

Cheaper by the dozen? Sorry, but I find a) the number of spots too much, just like b) the number of rooms where they are supposed to be used. But maybe it's a matter of taste and I'm not in the mainstream?!

Way too many spots.

I think suspended ceilings with indirect lighting (stretch ceilings?) are cool. But that requires at least 10 to 15 cm of extra room height, which AFAIK no one has in new buildings. Therefore, we only use normal ceiling outlets and normal lights.

Me neither; I would probably put on makeup everywhere except my face

But I also don’t like ceiling spotlights; too many especially not. To me, it has the charm of an office. I like it subtle and targeted; and I have something in common again.

Rhenish greetings

Good morning everyone,

thanks for the first responses. The general tenor seems to be against the number of spots. Well, I generally find spots quite stylish, but of course, it can be debated in what form or how many.

1. How did you solve it? Do you perhaps have some pictures. Feel free to send them via PM.

2. I also find suspended ceilings with indirect lighting very nice, but I can’t really get my girlfriend excited about it. If she were, it’s really the case that I wouldn’t have space for it in my new build. The ceiling height is 2.50 m. Would I make the rooms too tight by doing that? What about a suspended ceiling at the edge of the rooms?

What other suggestions would there be:

1. Well, I could imagine hanging a nice pendant lamp above the dining table. We once considered that we would then be very fixed where the table later is, probably. Moving it, etc., is then inconvenient because of the lamp. But I wonder how often you actually do that, and if you want to have it permanently, then you could also move the lamp.

2. In the hallway, I could also imagine wall lights nicely. I would find that quite nice. The spots at the stairs should stay, but maybe this lighting will also be done over the steps. That is still undecided.

3. I would like to have the spots nicely over the workspace. But would that already be enough for the kitchen lighting, or does a light still have to go in the workspace so to speak? Then this group of spots could also go, which I would find good. My girlfriend is afraid it could be too dark, and she would find it nice if our kitchen wall were somehow illuminated. Are there possibilities for that?

I find this topic really difficult because you can only imagine the overall impression to a limited extent. The lighting consultation was very disappointing. Do you know where one could see lighting design live? Possibly in show home parks?

Thanks anyway for suggestions and criticism.

Regards,
Christian

Hello Christian,

I know a good, but not exactly cheap, photo studio. If Hilden is acceptable for you in terms of travel time, I will gladly send you the link.
