Hello everyone,

Over the weekend I learned that there are combined heat and power plants for single-family homes. Specifically, the product "der Dachs" was mentioned. However, I have not found any post about this topic in this forum at all. How come?

Are CHP plants so new or simply not suitable for single-family homes?

Hello,
not everything that makes sense, has proven itself or is suitable in large units (industry, commercial) can be easily transferred or scaled down to small units (single-family house, two-family house).
Combined heat and power plants are usually uneconomical here!

Best regards

Hello €Uri,

Thank you for your response. What is the reason for this inefficiency? Is it the acquisition costs, or are there too many surpluses being produced that are not utilized?

Specifically, the "Dachs" is much too large for a single-family house. The "Dachs" is only built in one version. However, there are smaller devices from other manufacturers. In that performance class, it will be even less economical. The ratio between heating energy and electricity consumption is simply unfavorable. The purchase cost is relatively high, and the service and repair costs are expected to be quite high. As far as I could find out, the small devices are particularly not very mature and reliable. I will be able to gain experience with the "Dachs" from the end of the year, as I have decided on the device. However, it will be installed in a commercial operation. Whether it makes sense will probably only be seen after a few years. For the existing conditions, there was no real alternative. Exclusively gas or oil is legally almost no longer possible, a large pellet heating system is too labor-intensive and prone to faults, and the peak heating loads could not be realized with heat pumps.

Hello €uro,

Thank you very much for the clarification.

Hello Waldorf,

Thank you very much for the detailed report. Even if this may seem very optimistic, it would be very interesting if you could share your experiences with the Dachs here or in a separate thread.
