Hello everyone,
I need your opinions on the following problem.
We are currently renovating my grandma's house, meaning new floors, new bathroom, etc.
We had a small bathroom (about 1.5 x 2.5 m) including a bathtub and toilet.
Since the bathtub was unfortunately leaking, water collected and we had water damage in the adjacent room.
Now we have completely redone and enlarged the bathroom.
Where the water damage occurred, we removed the wall and built an extension using drywall for a walk-in shower.
The floor foundation was also redone. That means the existing floor of the adjacent room was removed and a new foundation built so that we would have no problems with the slope.
Everything is fine so far. No problems with the shower or bathroom for about 1 year.
However, a strange smell started in the adjacent room (where the water damage was in the wall back then) – it smells like wood beginning to rot.
The smell comes from the floor.
The floor structure is as follows: foundation slab, BitPerlit leveling material (because the foundation was very uneven), soft fiber boards, 18 mm OSB boards, impact-protection foil, laminate floor.
As the smell got stronger, we removed the laminate and the OSB boards and checked the drywall of the shower. However, it is dry, as well as the CW bottom rail.
What was noticeable though is that the substrate, i.e. below the foundation slab, is slightly damp. It is sand or earth mixture.
An acquaintance said it might come from the soft fiber boards?
Does anyone here have advice or what would you recommend as the next step?
Thanks in advance
