Hello dear home builders,

we are planning an 8.18m (inside dimension), 8.42m (outside dimension) wide garage for 3 cars. One car will be moved only very rarely. The other two should be driven in and out daily.

I am unsure what the minimum width of the garage door (sectional door) must be so that we can comfortably drive in with two cars. The construction company says 6m is okay. I am concerned that this will be a bit tight if the door is positioned in the middle.

Do you have any experience?
Regards, Robert

Does the gate absolutely have to be exactly in the middle? That makes it more complicated for one of the daily used cars if the gate is not exactly oversized. Better to position the gate on one side so that 2 cars can drive straight in and out; for the third vehicle, you'll just have to maneuver a bit if it ever needs to get out.

Depending on the width of the vehicles and how far they park from the gate, the 6m can be enough. The two outer ones will then always have to move a bit to the side.

Wow, 24 cm total width for both exterior walls is quite tight for this span. Generally – even for three equally used cars – I would never ever consider a single-piece wide swing gate system. Besides, you should – including visually – share much more about your plans. Garage, door(s), and driveway (including the course on the terrain!) are a system that cannot be considered in isolated aspects. Additionally, I would rather store a seasonal vehicle, a Sunday classic car, or a hunting vehicle separately.

A car can steer, and as long as you don't have to drive three vehicles out of the garage at the same time, you can make a gate narrower than three parallel straight exits. The depth of the garage naturally plays a role in this. It is a matter of comfort.

Hello : Why would you store the aforementioned vehicles separately?

I separate everyday and occasional vehicles for practical and discretion reasons. Why should the Spider get a pollen shower every time a garage door opens to drive through with the daily driver? Also, the neighbors don't need an overview of the entire fleet; that would only diminish the usefulness of the [Anderswoer] license plate for the pleasure vehicle, which you obviously don't own to make others envious ;-)
