Dear community,
my husband and I want to set up a garden shed in our garden, which with an attached shed should be about 5x4.8m in size. According to the manufacturer, it weighs just under 2,000kg in total and can be easily assembled by block board. We are both a carpenter’s son and daughter respectively and can handle that well. Only the foundation is causing us worry and we need help. May I ask for your tips/advice?
In the attachment you will see a rough sketch (I have not yet included the foundation here). There is already a level place where for many years a caravan with wooden enclosure and extension stood, which was demolished. (This old construction stood solely on patio slabs.) The area for the new garden shed must be larger though, meaning we either have to put the house on stilts at the front or make a strip foundation, I think.
As you can see, the garden has a slope and consists of clay soil. Below the clay there is a rock layer, but we do not know at what depth, so we assume that a point foundation or a construction on stilts is not suitable here. Right?
At the moment we would therefore assume that we should make a strip foundation. Specific questions about that:
1. How deep should the drainage behind the house be so that draining rainwater does not push the slope downward?
2. How deep in the soil would the foundation have to be laid (especially at the front, where we have to build up or pour a 80cm high wall of concrete on the foundation)?
3. We would first fill the strip foundation inside with soil and then with gravel. Is that correct?
We have no access with heavy equipment at the site (a vibrating plate and such is available) and it should be a solution for a small budget. Nevertheless, of course, we want to build it so that it lasts...
Many thanks in advance for your help and your time,
Sonja
