Hello dear forum readers,

we have just started renovating a house from the 70s. Our bedroom and living room border the neighbor's garden. The neighbors like to party or are not particularly quiet (or we might be noise sensitive :)). In any case, we want to do everything possible from the beginning to protect ourselves from noise as much as possible. Is it worth installing soundproof windows of a high category (4-6), or is that a waste of money because the noise also penetrates through the exterior walls? And if so, can the exterior walls be made more soundproof without having to spend a lot of money? Would it be worthwhile to hire a structural engineer to take a look at the house and the possibilities? Yesterday we wanted to look for soundproof windows (category 4) on the internet but then gave up on simply ordering something because of the variety of options and information, especially since mistakes can be made during installation... In any case, I would like to sincerely thank you in advance for the help!!!!!!

Hello,

No one here can answer these questions reliably because no one knows your house or the values of the individual components.

I would recommend that you look for an expert, for example through the Bundesverband freier Sachverständiger, who is well versed in old building renovation. Then arrange an appointment on site with this expert and afterward – once they have assessed the property – discuss the various options. A structural engineer is the wrong contact; if the structural calculations need to be redone due to renovation measures, the expert will point this out to you.

Kind regards
