Does it have to be a hammer drill if I only need the drill for a shelf?

hello,
my tools are not very extensive, now I want to buy a drill. Do I absolutely need a hammer drill or is a normal drill enough? I just want to hang a shelf, I don't really do more than that. My friend says a man without a hammer drill is not a real man!!

Hello, if you only want to occasionally drill a hole in the wall, a normal drill is sufficient for you. It is even the case that with a hammer drill you can cause more damage than you want, because if the wall is not very stable, you always get very large holes with such a drill that then have to be painstakingly filled again.

Hello,
a drill that can switch modes would be ideal for you, such a thing exists. You can use the normal function to drill small holes in the wall, and if you need more power, you can switch on the hammer drill function. I think that would be the right choice for you!!

Hammer drill

Hello
I completely agree with Bobo's opinion. For your use, a regular drill would be sufficient, but you never know when you might need to drill something else. And if, for example, you have to drill a hole in your house wall for a basketball hoop, you'll be stuck with a regular drill. Also, when it comes to tools, you shouldn't necessarily save money. Using bad tools is simply no fun and is frustrating.
As Bobo already said, buy a drill that can do both. It's best to get detailed advice at the hardware store when buying and tell the salesperson right away that the hammer drill function will be used no more than three times a year. ;)

Best regards, Förster

A drill without a hammer function is not worth much
