Do radiators of oil heating systems also get warm without a circulating pump?

Hello!

I am taking over a house at the turn of the year. The installed oil heating system (Fa. MAN) is from 1973 and must be replaced in the spring. However, the circulation pump is defective. The heating engineer only wants to replace the heating system in an emergency during winter (we still have a proper winter here) and a new circulation pump is supposed to cost €120. Allegedly, the radiators will also become pleasantly warm without a circulation pump. Now my question; doesn’t it cost an enormous amount of extra energy to run the oil heating without a pump? Am I not throwing the €120 that the pump costs straight into the heating oil?

Have a nice evening!

Hello,

If one was installed, there was certainly a reason for it ;)

On the one hand yes, on the other hand no. The heat generator presumably does not deliver its output without a pump. Result => short-cycling! higher consumption!
On the other hand, it is to be assumed that the heating surfaces are undersupplied because the necessary volume flow is missing. Result => insufficient room temperatures. lower consumption! The truth will be somewhere in between and can only be answered with a calculation. ;)
"Real" and functioning gravity heating systems (without a heating circuit pump) are technical monuments and should be protected! 90% of existing systems are botched systems with considerable optimization potential. However, the energy optimization of existing buildings is considerably more demanding compared to a new building!

Hello Beachhunter,

a quick question upfront, is the heating system still in operation? I ask because according to the Energy Saving Ordinance 2009, all heating systems installed before 01.10.1978 must be replaced.
So my recommendation is immediate replacement of the heating system! I would request quotes from 2 – 3 heating engineers. Another reason for an immediate replacement is that until 31.12.2010, there are basically still 400 € subsidies available for boiler replacement.

Now the only question left is whether to continue with oil or possibly convert to gas?
The existing price linkage of gas to oil has been removed, so it is to be expected that in the medium term gas will become cheaper relative to oil. This is also because the available reserves for gas are sufficient for about 60 years, much longer than oil. Aside from the fact that gas causes much less CO2 emissions than oil. Due to the lifespan of gas condensing boilers and technological developments, you will have to deal with the topic again in 20 to 25 years anyway.
I would check if gas is available in the street or even already in the house. Overall, including installation, hydraulic balancing, etc., I would assume an investment requirement of around 5,000 €.

Hope I was able to help you. Of course, we would be happy to answer any further questions you may have. ;)

Best regards

Erik

Hello Erik,

....Due to the lifespan of gas condensing boilers and technological development, you will have to *in 20 to 25 years* anyway ...

There must be a typo here ;)

Kind regards
