Hello, I want to make a chimney cap out of copper and have it installed on our chimney at the roof ridge. Our roofer says that is not possible because of our zinc gutters. However, the copper has no electrical contact with the zinc. Or are the minimal wash-offs from the copper over the years enough to corrode the gutters? What do the experts say about this? Thank you very much and best regards. Jean

Since you have not received any response so far and no expert is known to me here in the forum regarding this matter, I will give a brief tip. If you google the terms zinc and copper, you will find in another construction forum (for houses with beams in the masonry) the explanation why copper should not come before zinc. This would support the statement of your roofer.

that is correct. Copper "eats up" the less noble zinc, even if it has no direct contact. it is the same with water pipes, for example the particles accumulate in the water/rain and irreversibly damage the less noble material.

For all those who like it scientific: see electronegativity. I wouldn’t do it, especially since the copper price is at a minimum of €3.5/kg. That certainly attracts one or two thieves. Stainless steel can also be welded better if that should ever become necessary.

Take Anthra-Zinc - we have done that now and it looks great. From a distance, it also looks like weathered copper again.
