Hello everyone,

we are currently looking for a nice clinker brick for our single-family house. During our search, we came across the clinker bricks from the Danish manufacturer Petersen Tegl.

Does anyone have experience with the clinker bricks from this manufacturer?

Many of the clinker bricks from the manufacturer have a beautiful engobe coating. Is something like that permanently durable, or should I expect it to change over the years?

Best regards, Marco

... which we do not know here yet (which makes qualified statements difficult).

One of my gaps in knowledge is which stone formats are common in Denmark. Basically, it is advantageous if clinker formats have a harmonizing "rhythm" with the masonry bricks – but be aware that clinker (like any visible masonry shell) fundamentally requires an experienced applicator. General contractors like to have such work done by "screed Ahmeds," which I strongly advise against (and even more so against trying it yourself with your father-in-law and the barbecue buddies).

In essence, that is a surface color which will never reach the quality of a full body color. It will certainly be lightfast over time, scratch resistance varies greatly depending on the manufacturer's quality, and faulty batches can happen. But it is not particularly impact resistant, that is an Achilles heel: you have to store and process that stuff like raw eggs wearing kid gloves – the more the shades of clay and engobe differ, the more noticeable every chip is. So be especially cautious with "unnatural" shades like the popular carbon gray, blackberry metallic, and similar sun-bleached colors favored by Pinterest-misled modern small-house builders.

That is a point that "bothers" me with most building materials. I think the material itself should also determine the appearance. The way of thinking: "I might only live another fifty years, it doesn't need to last longer" bothers me (especially since many "new" surfaces last much, much shorter). but that is just a side note Brick should, to my taste, look on the outside as it does on the inside.

The converse, that it is on the inside the way it should look on the outside, is also feasible for a purely facing material. Added directly to the clay "dough," a coloring additive could result in a compressive strength that might be somewhat lacking for a masonry material.
Basically, I also think that the preparation method of the "proper thorough firing"—I always say, essentially a clinker is a brick like a rusk—should be sufficient to influence the coloration of the finished material. But currently, the prevailing view is rather that every fashion color must be made possible—almost regardless of how it is imposed on the material.

For me, a highlight of peculiarity are ceramic tiles with a wood look. They do it because they can ...
