Go to several hardware stores to test listen. Although that's actually nonsense, because the doorbell sounds very different in your room acoustics than it does in the hardware store. You really have to consider reflections, standing waves, etc., depending on the gong frequency. It also depends on the age of the person hearing the gong; older people hear the high frequencies somewhat worse, which can also change the perception.

You see: It’s not that simple at all. Simply going to the hardware store or ordering one with several tones would be too easy. A doorbell is, after all, a decision for life!

You certainly don't have to make a science out of it. If it annoys you too much, you just buy a new one for a few euros.

Buy one that looks good and has 10-20 polyphonic tones to choose from. Done.
