Botch on the interior staircase or do I have to accept it like this?

Hello dear forum,

I am at the final stage of my construction with a GC.

Yesterday my indoor staircase was installed and the quality and appearance and the decision by the stair builder to install everything like this actually blew me away.

I want to exclude the "Frankenstein" look here for now, since the stair builder says we had this sampled like that, but I believe that nowhere in the world has anyone "voluntarily" sampled something like this.

For me, it is now first about this unspeakably ugly railing construction on the ground floor with differently sized posts and this unnecessary gridded dust trap between the stair stringer and the railing itself. I have never seen anything like this and would never have expected that in a new building despite measurement and sufficient planning and preparation time by the stair builder/carpenter such an on-site improvisation would have to be accepted in the end.

Is this already botched work or does one have to accept something like this?

Money has not yet been paid, as there is a retention here and the GC overall will still receive significantly more money from me than the services rendered are outstanding.

Thank you very much for your assessments.

Functionally, it works. But it is built so carelessly. I would report a defect and demand an aesthetically correct construction. With proper planning, this would not have happened to the staircase builder.

Have you approved the planning as is?

You can see, regardless of the planning, that the execution was botched. In picture two, the cladding is so high that it takes into account a build-up height for the finished floor (2cm?), while the parapet part is almost resting directly on the screed. In any case, this is definitely botched execution. Is the staircase included in the general contractor's scope of work? Or was it paid for separately? If separately, how much does it cost?

There was no planning or visualization or anything like that. We went to the stair builder for the sampling and discussed things with him, such as the type of wood, parquet glued or strip glued, tread-riser steps or riser steps only, etc.
There was no planning/planning documents in the form of how the parapet construction is, how the transitions are, etc.

We more or less only discussed the materials and the basically intended type of staircase.

How is it supposed to normally proceed?

The staircase itself was part of the general contractor’s work. The holdback for this, since it was completed well after acceptance, amounts to €11,500 and has not yet been paid out.
