Homebuyers in Berlin will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the future. The tax rate for real estate transfer tax is to be increased by 0.5 percentage points to 5.0 percent.

The Berlin Senate has set the course for an increase in the real estate transfer tax and passed a draft law submitted by Finance Senator Dr. Ulrich Nußbaum. This provides for taxing the acquisition of real estate in the future at 5.0 percent. Until now, the tax rate in Berlin has been 4.5 percent. The state expects additional revenues of 50 million euros annually from the increase. The draft law will now be submitted to the House of Representatives for a vote.

With the increase, Berlin is catching up with the states of Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, NorDeutsche Reihenhausein-Westfalen, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia, where the real estate transfer tax is also 5.0 percent. In Rheinland-Pfalz, an increase to 5.0 percent will come into effect on 1.3.2012.

Rheinland Pfalz raises real estate transfer tax

Anyone buying land in Rheinland-Pfalz will have to pay more taxes in the future: The state parliament decided on Wednesday in Mainz to increase the real estate transfer tax from 3.5 to five percent.

The decision was made with a red-green majority. This is intended to channel 100 million euros more into the state treasury per year. This should help ensure that the debt brake can be implemented by the year 2020. Finance Minister Carsten Kühl (SPD) emphasized that the funds would benefit the consolidation of the state budget. The increase corresponds to less than ten percent of the total savings volume; the rest will be cut from expenditures. Eleven federal states have already increased the tax or are in the process of doing so.

The CDU opposition abstained. Finance politician Gerd Schreiner criticized that the municipalities were not sufficiently involved in the increase. The CDU cannot watch municipalities bleed because of this, Schreiner said. Kühl rejected the criticism. The increase was balanced. The state government wants and needs to set priorities. The real estate transfer tax is a tax that goes to the states.
