Always call more craftsmen?

Hello,

I have a question.

There are still various small jobs needed in our house.

For example, two doors in the house should no longer open inward, but in the future open outward.

I want to be fair to the craftsmen. Do you think it is legitimate to call several carpenters and have them take a look? In the end just take the one that costs the least.... The others then only had travel expenses etc. and no job. I somehow always feel a bit guilty about that.....

I would like to know how you handle this... Because sometimes you get very different offers from different craftsmen regarding prices.....

Thanks ;)

Change the door hinge, a price inquiry over the phone is sufficient. No one needs to come out.

You still have a lot to learn... ;-)

I would usually (!) try to get several offers and - in addition - negotiate.
If necessary, ask beforehand whether there is a cost for the trip to the inspection, in case it is really necessary. If it's all unattractive small stuff for the craftsmen and even obtaining a single offer is difficult, you will surely notice that. :)

With the current workload, no one will come by for something like that. The question is whether the frame can be removed or not; if not, a new door is needed. This can usually be clarified with photos and over the phone, and you can also ask 2-3 people. Depending on where you live, you can be glad if you find anyone for that at all. If you don't have two left hands, you can do it yourself.

Yes, always call several craftsmen.

For small matters, I would also be satisfied with two quotes. You can usually tell quickly whether the listed work is reasonable and fairly priced. If not, then ask or get another quote.

Here, luckily, they are all "modern," meaning I send an email with photos and ask for a rough price estimate...

1-3 are contacted, depending on what it is about.
We were recommended the carpenter for our living room, so I didn't make any comparison (meaning I went to the furniture store and looked at what similar things probably cost).
