Hello,

I will have a Vaillant Arotherm air-to-water heat pump installed.

For about €10,000, I am being offered a centrally controlled ventilation system. (House has 3 floors and approximately 170m².)

Is it worth installing the centrally controlled version, or do you think a decentralized one is sufficient?

With centralized, you only have two wall openings, with decentralized several. With centralized, the ventilation is usually in a technical room, with decentralized it is distributed - caution due to noise especially in the bedroom area. Centralized usually costs more because of the ducts that need to be installed.

A ventilation system should not make noise

In decentralized systems, the airflow reverses every 60 seconds for the purpose of heat recovery. These many motors, which no longer make noise in one corner but are now located everywhere in every room, can of course be more audible, especially when the sound frequency reverses with the 60-second cycle. To address your fundamental question: what does "worth it" mean to you? From a purely economic perspective, a controlled residential ventilation system is not/is never worth it. From a comfort perspective, there are great advantages. Personally, I was never convinced by decentralized systems (too many wall openings, too many motors, too little savings compared to central systems, no experience with decentralized, but within my own family with central systems).
