I have now made that mistake too; there are chimneys that have a ventilation pipe in the middle, to which you can connect, for example, a fireplace. The advantage is that the fireplace/tiled stove does not draw the room air, so you don't have to ventilate endlessly in winter and let cold air come in from outside.
Only fireplaces with the same mode of operation may be connected to one flue. For example, we have a two-flue chimney; two wood stoves may be connected to one flue, but the pellet boiler must be connected to its own flue because it has a fan. Fireplaces with and without fans must not be connected together to one flue.
